WhatsApp Business account restricted or temporarily banned: what the notice means and how to fix it

WhatsApp sends three different notices and they are not the same problem. A warning means nothing is limited yet. A restriction means new conversations are blocked while existing ones still work, and it usually lifts on its own after Meta's review. A temporary ban stops the account for a set period and can become permanent if it repeats. Nearly every case traces back to one of two things: unofficial automation tools, or sending to people who did not opt in. The fix is to request a review, stop the behaviour that caused it, and move messaging to the official WhatsApp Business Platform.

Check in the first minute

  1. 1Read the notice carefully. “May be restricted”, “is restricted” and “temporarily banned” are different situations with different fixes.
  2. 2Stop any bulk-sending tool, browser extension or unofficial API immediately. Continuing while under review makes it worse.
  3. 3Note the timer if there is one. Restrictions and temporary bans usually end on their own at the stated time.
  4. 4Do not create a new account with a different number to get around it. Repeated evasion is how temporary bans become permanent.

The three notices and what each one means

NoticeWhat is affectedWhat usually happens next
Your account may be restricted soonNothing yet. This is an early warning.Nothing, if the flagged behaviour stops. Restriction, if it continues.
Your account is restrictedStarting new chats and some features. Replies to existing contacts, calls and incoming messages still work.Lifts automatically after Meta's review, typically within a few days. A notification confirms it.
You are temporarily bannedMost or all messaging, for the period shown.Ends when the timer runs out. Repeat bans can become permanent, with the number blocked for good.

Meta detects these issues with automated systems and with reports from the people receiving the messages. A first or minor issue usually gets a warning or a temporary restriction. Repeated or serious issues get bans.

Why Meta restricts a business account

  • Unofficial automation tools. Browser extensions, bulk-sender software and grey-market APIs send through the Business App in ways that look like spam and skip the rate and consent checks the official platform enforces. This is the most common cause.
  • Many messages to new contacts in a short window. The Business App is built for one-to-one chats. Sending the same message to a long list of people who have never messaged the business triggers a cooldown.
  • Spam reports and blocks. When recipients report or block the number, the quality rating falls and a restriction follows.
  • Content that breaks the Messaging or Commerce Policy. Unsolicited promotions, misleading offers, or goods WhatsApp does not allow.
  • No opt-in. Messaging people who never agreed to hear from the business, at any volume.
  • Account sharing or unofficial multi-device use outside WhatsApp's own linked-devices feature.
The policies that apply are the WhatsApp Business Terms of Service, the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy and the WhatsApp Commerce Policy. Meta Verified subscribers also fall under the Meta Verified for Business terms.

If the account is restricted right now

  1. 1

    Stop the cause

Uninstall any unofficial tool or extension and stop bulk sending. Meta's own guidance for the temporarily-banned notice is to switch to the official app and stop automated sending, or risk a permanent ban.

  2. 2

Request a review from the notice

Tap Request a review or Contact us in the notice itself. Explain what happened plainly, for example that a staff member sent a promotion to a contact list, and say what has changed. Reviews of temporary issues usually come back within a day or two.

  3. 3

For a number on the Business Platform, appeal through Business Support Home

In Meta Business Support Home, select the affected WhatsApp account and submit the appeal with evidence of opt-ins and the fix.

  4. 4

    Wait out an automatic restriction

Meta's own FAQ says a restriction needs no action and ends after the allocated time, with a notification when it does. Keep replying to existing customers in the meantime; that still works.

  5. 5

Do not open a new account to get around it

That is treated as evasion and is the fastest route to a permanent ban on the business, not just the number.

If the ban is permanent

A permanent ban means the number cannot be used on WhatsApp again. A review can still be requested if the ban was a mistake, and Meta's FAQ notes that a Business App subscription cancelled by a ban is not refunded. If the review fails, the business needs a new number, and the real fix is to make sure the new one runs on the official platform from day one, with opt-ins and approved templates, so the same pattern cannot repeat.

How to make sure it does not happen again

Every cause above is a Business App problem. The app is designed for a person chatting with customers one at a time. Broadcasts, automation and a team inbox belong on the WhatsApp Business Platform, where Meta sets the rules for exactly those things and enforces them in a way that protects the number.

  • Marketing messages go only to contacts who opted in, and only through templates Meta has approved in advance. The platform will not send anything else.
  • Messaging limits grow with the number's quality rating, from a few hundred new conversations a day to unlimited, and the rating is visible at all times so a dip is caught before it becomes a restriction.
  • Replies within the 24-hour customer window are free-form, so the AI agent and the team can answer naturally without touching templates.
  • Everything is on one number with full records, so if Meta ever asks, the opt-in and the content are there.
ZapUp runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform as a Meta Business Partner. Number setup, business verification, template approvals and the move from another provider are part of onboarding. Numbers restricted for Business App misuse can usually be brought onto the platform once the restriction lifts.

Questions

Is a restriction the same as a ban?+

No. A restriction limits new conversations for a review period and lifts on its own. A ban stops messaging for a set time and can become permanent if the behaviour repeats.

Can existing customers still be messaged while restricted?+

Usually yes. Replies to people who already messaged the business, incoming messages and calls keep working. Starting new chats is what stops.

Does Meta Verified remove a restriction?+

There are anecdotal reports of that, nothing official. Treat it as a verification product, not a fix. Request the review and remove the cause.

How many messages a day is safe on the Business App?+

There is no published number, and the Business App is not built for volume. If the business needs to message more than a handful of new contacts a day, it needs the Business Platform, where limits are explicit and grow with quality.

Will moving to the official platform fix a restricted number?+

Not while the restriction is active. Once it lifts, the number can be registered on the platform, and the behaviour that caused the restriction cannot recur because the platform does not allow it.

Still stuck?

Setup, verification and migration are part of ZapUp onboarding

The number is provisioned, verified and connected by the team, moving from another provider is free, and the AI agent, inbox and broadcasts run on the official platform where these problems do not occur.

Never clock off.

Once the number is healthy, put an AI agent on it.
